Bumblebees are in crisis and need your protection

Bumblebees are very important pollinators for fruits, veggies, trees and flowers. Certain types of bumble bees love to nest in small spaces in roofs, bird boxes & gaps in brickwork. Their nests are small and do not cause structural damage. Their lifecycle is short and they die off around September. The advice is to leave them alone until they have left the nest and then seal up any holes to prevent them returning in 2027! BDBKA do not remove bumble bee nests, if it is imperative they are removed, please contact a commercial provider that tries to re-home them.

Please continue to be vigilant and report any suspect hornets, ideally with a photograph, to DAERA via the Asian Hornet Watch app. Suspected nests should not be disturbed but reported immediately.

International Meeting of Young Beekeepers (IMYB)

In July 2026, Northern Ireland will proudly  welcome young beekeepers from around the world as it hosts the International Meeting of Young Beekeepers (IMYB) for the  first time.

This  unique event will bring together beekeepers aged 12–18 for an  unforgettable programme of learning, competition, social elements and  cultural exchange.

BDBKA are excited to be welcoming the young beekeepers at our Minnowburn Apiary for their practical assessments.
